Hubby and I went to see "Doomsday" on Monday night. It was rather good and extremely entertaining. I love Neil Marshall's films. He always mixes his genres and makes the most interesting films. I loved "Dog Soldiers" and "The Descent." I think he's quite brilliant. You're never quite sure what you're going to get. "Doomsday" is no different. It's sort of "28 Days Later" meets "Escape From New York" meets "Mad Max" with some "Road Warrior" thrown in too. I know that "Road Warrior" is the sequel to "Mad Max" but they are two totally different films.
Anywhoo, it starts with a killer virus plaguing Scotland. It pretty much kills most of Scotland so Britain decides to build a wall to keep the virus in Scotland and away from England. It works for a while but the virus re-appears in London. The government decides to send in a task force to find a scientist who might still be alive in Scotland and who possibly found a cure to the virus beacuse there are survivors in Scotland. The leader of the task force is played by Rhona Mitra. She totally impresses in this role. I'm used to seeing her on T.V. as the office's British sexpot, not kicking ass. She was a survivor of the virus as a child. Her mother got her out of Scotland just before the military closed the wall's door. Her eye got shot out before she escaped and therefore as an adult, she has a fake eye. It's pretty cool. She can take it out and watch what her eye is seeing with the special watch she wears. Handy for looking around corners and such. She and her team have 46 hours to go into Scotland, find the cure and make it back to the wall. Needless to say, they get ambushed by survivors who have pretty much gone feral and calamity ensues.
There's lots of blood and gore. Neil Marshall did not skimp on the bloody effects...another reason why I love his films. I also love the fact that he didn't Americanize the film. It takes place in Britain and has British, Scottish and Irish actors. I also loved the soundtrack. Lots of 80's music that fit right in with the action. It was quite the thrill ride!
It was very entertaining and I recommend it for those not faint of heart who enjoy a good popcorn flick!
