Went to see "Miami Vice" on Saturday night. Hubby was all pumped for a big-time shoot-em-up action flick, but it being a Michael Mann film, I knew better. Needless to say, he was disappointed (he was thinking Michael Bay not Micheal Mann). I on the other hand found it quite engrossing. I liked the new style that he used to film it. It wasn't the flashy, music video type of style that he used in the 80's for the T.V. series. It was gritty, and real, like he was following around real people in their real lives. I really could have done without Colin Farrell's really bad mullet that they tried to make blonde. You would think that after the disaster that his hair was in "Alexander" that they would know that he cannot pull off blonde. In the T.V. series, Sonny Crockett was hot and stylish, but in this film he comes off as greasy (maybe it was just me, I don't know). Gong Li as his Chinese-Cuban love interest was a marvellous choice. I absolutely looooooove her! Ever since I saw her in "Raise the Red Lantern" she has been my female Asian crush. I am so glad that she learned how to speak English so she could do American movies now. She was fantastic in "Memoirs of a Geisha" and she's fantastic in this. When I told Hubby that she is 41 years old, he couldn't believe it. She is the epitome of gorgeossity and she can act (even better!). I felt that Jamie Foxx was underused, just as Tubbs was in the T.V. show. "Miami Vice" always seemed to be focused on Crockett moreso than Tubbs and it hasn't changed 20 years later. Which is a shame because Jamie Foxx does have an Oscar and therefore deserves jucier roles, but what can you do? All in all. it was a gritty cop DRAMA. It's entertaining, but if you are expecting a super-huge action flick then stay home. If "Heat" or "Collateral" put you to sleep, then you will not like this movie. If you appreciate cop dramas, then enjoy!
