There was a sad article in the newspaper the other day about our last drive-in theatre. It's not going to open at all this year. That makes me very sad. I loved the drive-in! I have very fond memories of the drive-in. My parents used to take us to the drive-in all the time. My very first memory of the drive-in was seeing "Jaws" in 1975. I was 4 and it scared the piss out of me. I still have an irrational fear of any open water. I first saw "Star Wars" at the drive-in and thought it was the absolute coolest movie EVER! I sat in the front seat just staring in awe at everything that happened on the screen and comparing it to my comic book when I got home. As soon as Darth Vader first came on the screen, my brothers hid in the back of the station wagon and fell asleep. They were only 2, so I don't hold it against them. The drive-in used to play a family movie for the first feature and a more adult one for the second feature. I remember seeing the opening of "A Change of Seasons" with Anthony Hopkins and Bo Derek in the hot tub and thinking, whoa! When my parents caught me peeking over the seat watching the movie, they took away my glasses so I couldn't see the screen.

When I was a teenager and not old enough to drive yet, my best friend Corrie's brother Sean would let us tag along with him and his friends to the drive-in. His friends would always bring another car so they didn't have to be seen with us kids. I also remember when Corrie had mono, but she pulled her sick butt out of bed because Treena, Tammy and I were going to the drive-in. Good times, good times.

We used to have 3 drive-ins in Regina. The Queen City, the Starlight and the Cinema-6 twin drive-in. The only one that was left was the Cinema-6 and the owners decided not to open it because it needs a lot of renovations and they don't feel it makes enough money to warrant them. That's too bad because drive-ins are becoming few and far between. It's hard to compete with home theatres and stadium multiplexes with surround sound. I guess the lure of a pickle-on-a-stick just isn't enough to pack the drive-in any more (it might sound weird, but they were the most amazingly delicious pickles I've ever tasted).

Farewell, Cinema-6! Hopefully someone will be nostalgic and re-open you someday...That would make me happy!
